why do they do this?

i've noticed sometimes people sprinkle water on someone while doing path. why do they do this? or it a form of protection for the person? like incase they think there's a spirit on them or something? lol someone did this to me and i was sleeping and then i was like what the..? lol i was too sleepy to care so i was like ok lol do whatever.

Maybe it was to wake you up since you were sleepy during paath, lol

I think to make them fresh.
