Who is a Sant and how is he different from a Brahmgyani???

Posted by jpsingh77
Dear Sadh Sangat Ji,

In Sukhmani Sahib, in numerous places, there is a mention of a "Sant", including in two dedicated ashpatis.

Dass just want to understand how will one define a "Sant"? Who is a Sant and how is he different from a "Brahmgyani"?

Thanks,

According to Gurbani Sant is defined as someone who does not forget Naam at any time:

Brahmgyani is someone who has known and experienced Brahm Vaheguru.

Sometimes Gursikhs who have not yet reached the highest state of Vaheguru Darshan, are collectively referred to as Sants:

The above pauri is the 9th pauri of Siri Anand Sahib and contains Hukams for Gursikh Sants.

A Brahmgyani and an accomplished Sant are one and the same thing.

The above is a very brief Vichaar on this very wide subject.

I've always been confused about one thing...

We should only consider Guru Granth Sahib Ji as our only true, living guru! We MUST NOT consider any other human being as a Guru. This much is clear and must be followed diligently.

On one hand we (rightly) condemn those who follow different deras and start considering them as Guru! However, if we follow any "Sant", aren't we simply following Waheguru Ji's Hukam as mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sant Ka Sang Vadh-bhaagi paayie, etc)? Can't those people claim that they are simply considering those dera-babas as "Sant" (or Brahmgyani, for that matter)? How do differentiate between Sant/Brahmgyaani and such "babas"?

Perhaps there is a thin line, which I'm unable to recognise!

Someone pls enlighten!

Thanks,
Dass

I heard in a katha long ago. A Sant is one who joins you with Sahib Siri Guru Granth Sahib Jee Maharaj. That is the measuring parameter of who is a Sant and who isn't. The one who joins you with himself/herself is not a Sant.

Mehtab Singh Ji, that makes a lot of sense!

Thank you!

The word Sant has also been used for Sri Guru ji also, this pauri is 1 fine example Guru Arjan Dev Ji referring to his Guru as Guru Sant:

(Ang 97 )

SANT is an avastha , not a title which people in the panth now have made it into. It's the most ''abused'' word in the panth .
