Sri Dasam Granth in rehatnamey?

Posted by Sukhdeep Singh
Lately Ive been trying to figure out what the term " ਜਪੁ ਤੇ ਜਾਪੁ " refers to in numerous rehatnamey?

Personally I do not believe it simply means reciting both Sri Japji Sahib, and Sri Jaap Sahib.
In Bhai Nand Lal Jis rehatnamey he mentions after taking ishnaan and doing Naam Abhyiaas one should recite Jap and Jaap.

Its obvious that ਕਰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪੜੇ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੁ is referring to doing Panj Bania after Ishnaan. We know through oral tradition that we do not recite just recite Sri Japji Sahib and Sri Jaap Sahib after Ishaan.

Bhai Nand Lal Jis rehatnama also mentions to recite ਜਪੁ and ਜਾਪੁ during noon

Prem Sumarag rehatnama also mentions to recite Jap and Jaap during noon

Bhai Sahib also states recite both Jaap and Jap during Amrit Vela

Notice how Jaap becomes before Jap. We know through oral tradition that we dont recite Jaap Sahib before JapJi Sahib?
Throughout our day we constantly recite banis from both Granths. During Amrit Vela we recite Panj Bania , during the evening we recite Rehras. Traditionally Aaarti was sun and it included banis from both granths. Only in the night do we not recite banis from both granths .

Sri Guru Granth Parkaash mentions that one should recite Jap and Jaap twice a day, recite Anand Sahib with Rehras and do standing Ardas ( Chandi Di Vaar) afterwards.

- Sri Guru Granth Parkaash

Since we know that reciting Jap and Jaap during AMrit Vela does not refer to simply reciting Sri Japji Sahib and Sri Jaap Sahib; instead it refers to recite Panj Bania, so we can assume that reciting Jap and Jaap during noon does refer to reciting Sri Japji Sahib and Sri Jaap Sahib.

In the passages of Sri Guru Granth Parkaash posted above there is mention of doing Ardas after rehras. There is mention of doing jap, and jaap which includes Anand Sahib in Rehras . In the following rehatnama of BHai Daya Singh Ji there is also mention of doing Jap and Jaap and concluding with Chandi Di Vaar which is a puratan Ardas.\
Bhai Daya Singh Ji states after doing Ishnaan and putting on Bana one should recite Jap and Jaap along with Sri Akal Ustat and conclude with a standing Ardas ( Chandi Di Vaar) through memory.
- Bhai Daya Singh JI

So from both Bhai Daya Singh Jis rehatnama and Sri Guru Granth Parkaash we can assume that Jap and Jaap can refer to reciting certian Banis like Anand Sahib, banis in Rehras, Sri Akal UStat, and Chandi Di Var. So I was wondering perhaps reciting Jap and Jaap means reciting banis from both Granths ( Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji ( Jap) and Sri Dasam Granth ( Jaap). Sri Japji Sahib is the first bani in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and is titled ਜਪੁ , and Sri Jaap Sahib is the first bani in Sri Dasam granth according to Bhai Desa Singh Jis rehatnama.

In prem sumarg rehatnama there is mention that after one is free from worldy duties which is usually during rehras time one should recite banis from Guru Sahiban.

BHai Desa Singh Ji mentions one should recite banis from both granths on a daily basis.

Both Sant Attar Singh Ji and and Bhai Randhir Singh Ji included many banis from both granths as part of their nitnem.
In Gurmat Bibek, Bhai Randhir Singh Ji mentions that a SIngh hasboth bir ras and shant ras. Bir ras is the mode where one can not tolerate injustice while shant ras is the ability to tolerate any type of pain/torture.
Guru Sahib mentions Sri Dasam Granth Ji is for the purpose of Bir Ras

Guru Sahib also mentions that in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji we will get Sat , Santokh ( Shant) , and contemplation

So it seems apparent that to get naam going steadily we must recite banis from both granths hand in hand.

Bhai Prahlad mentions that one should not even eat before reciting banis from both granths if they dont want to face reincarnation.

Panth has decided PanJ Baniya and Nam Simran for every sikh in the morning, it doesn't matter how we interpret older Rehatnamey.

When it comes to Gurbani, more is less, puratan Singhs, use to recite many banis like chandi Ki Vaar and Akal Ustat in addition to 5 Banis and various other Banis from Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Panth has decided what the bare minimum is for Sangat this does not mean we neglect rehatnamey. In addition, panth makes its decisions partly on rehatnamay.

There are rehatnamey that say that we should also recite bani during noon time.

Bhai Nand Lal Jis rehatnama

Prem Sumarag rehatnama

My point I was trying to make is I believe that Jap tay Jaap in above rehatnamey does not mean Sri Jap Ji Sahib and Sri Jaap Sahib nor does it mean Panj Bania instead it means banis from both granths.

In the following rehatnama

I would interpret ਪੜੇ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੁ as to mean recite Panj Bania since there is mention of waking up for Amrit Vela and doing Ishnaan but I cant apply this same meaning to noon time prayers.
