i noticed when reading another forum that a lot of young sikhs eat prepared snack foods. not only are they unhealthy, they're not bibeki and most aren't even vegetarian!

i thought it might be fun to put together a thread of our favorite healthy (or at least bibeki!) snack foods.

let's start with Sprouted Moong Chaat:

mix all ingredients until well combined. serve with fresh dahi and your favorite chutney.

* 1 cup uncooked whole green moong sprouts (recipe below)
* 1/4 red onion, chopped
* 1 medium cucumber, chopped
* 1 big potato- boiled and cubed small
* 1 big or 2 small vine tomatoes, chopped
* 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
* Handful of peanuts
* 5-6 leaves fresh coriander leaves (dhania), chopped
* 1 tablespoon chaat masala (recipe below)
* 1 teaspoon dried pomegranate seeds (anardana)
* Salt to taste

to make moong sprouts:

start with 1 cup whole moong beans, cheesecloth or keskee kapra, twine, a fine sieve, a pot with a lid (should hold at least 3 cups of sprouts - it might be best to do this in a clay pot or glass jar so as not to stain/rust your sarbloh)

Step 1. Sort through the beans and pick out any small stones or other foreign material.

Step 2. Place the beans in the sieve and rinse thoroughly.

Step 3 . Soak the beans in warm water for 8-10 hours, then drain thoroughly.

Step 4. Place the drained beans in the center of the cloth.

Step 5. Lift up the edges and tie together with twine.

Step 6. Place the wrapped beans in the pot and cover.

Step 7. Place the pot in a warm dark spot for 24 hours.

Step 8 . Check the sprouts after 24 hours. If you want them longer, place the beans in the sieve and gently rinse them, then repeat steps 4 through 7.

for chaat masala:

mix equal parts salt, jeera, dhania (seeds), and amchur powder, plus a pinch of red chili powder and black salt. grind it up and you're ready to go.
