I was doing vichar with a gurmukh over the weekend and he posed the question how can we make vaheguru ji happy with us? I found this very intresting, all that were present agreed that we would come together next week and discuss our findings with guidance from Gurbani. Can any of the Gurmukhs on this forum privide indications from gurbani on how to please Vaheguru. W eall know that Japping naam is the ulimate and that would make Vahegruu ji happy, but is that it or is there more.........

In three words, the answer to how to make Vaheguru happy is - ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ - Razaayee Vaheguru de Hukam Vich Chalna - to walk in the Hukam of Razaayee Vaheguru i.e. to live life according to the Hukam of Razaayee Vaheguru.

What is Razaayee's Hukam? Razaayee Vaheguru jee's Hukam is the Updesh of Satguru i.e. Gurmat which includes the Prime Hukam of Naam Abhyaas and obeying all instructions of Guru Sahib listed in Gurbani and other sources like Bhai Gurdaas jee's Baani, Bhai Nandlal jee's Baani and authentic Rehitnamas.

Bhai Kulbir Singh ji is absolutely right. Just wanted to add a small bit. Long ago I heard a discourse by a Hindu saint, who stated that once Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj asked Parmaatma as to what do we do to make you happy? What words do we speak? And the response was to sacrifice one’s sleep during Amritvela, also called as brahm mahoorat (Godly hours) by Hindus and Alal Subaah (the morning of Allah) by Muslims. Years later, I found that this is stated in the 4th pauri of Sri Japji Sahib.

Bhai Chaupa Singh Ji

After becoming initiated into Gurmat Naam one is suppose to study and follow that rehat brings happiness to Guru Sahib. The question arises what rehat brings Guru Sahib happy. Sikhi is simple our code of conduct is based on the main three pillars. Gumat Naam, GUrmat Daan, and Gurmat IShaan. In other words

1. Naam Japna
2. Kirat Karna
3. Vand Chhakna

A Gurusikh meditates on Naam through Gurus grace, and gives to others through Gurus grace. They do not put any faith in ritual like cleansing oneself in "holy" rivers. To them Ishaan consists of meditates and giving through Gurus grace. Obedience to these pillars brings much happiness to Guru Sahib.

Guru Sahib sums up the three pillars in the following pangti.

One who works for what he eats, and gives some of what he has O Nanak, he knows the Path.

Guru Sahib makes this code of conduct clearly in the following shabad. Every initiated Gursikh should study this shabad with strict discernment ( BibeK)

First Guru Sahib says if one calls themselves a "True Sikh" then they must : make an effort to wake early (during Amrit Vela) , meditate on Naam, respect and sing Gurbani.

Next a person is to

meaning one is not to live an idle life. Through honest means one is to meditate on Naam and make an honest living that doesnt conflict with Gurmat.

Guru Sahib concludes that a Gursikh should meditate on Naam and encourage others to medidate on Naam. So through our honest earnings we are to give part of the money for Tat Gurmat Parchar to worthy candidates to take Amrit and follow the same conduct. By doing Naam Abhyiaas, and propagating Gurmat Naam through loving devotion not only do we get Guru Jis happiness ; Guru Sahib becomes a sacrifice to such people.

So this is one of the many code of conducts one must adhere to get GUru SAHIBS happiness. We cannot chose part of the code of conduct and neglect the rest. If we are doing Naam Abyiaas but not doing parchar then we are only following halfe of the Hukum. According to our capability we must strictly abide by all Hukums/ Gurmat Rehats of Guru Sahib. We cannot adapt Gurmat according to our beliefs or practices instead we must adapt our beliefs according to Gurmat. By doing so then we get Guru Jis happiness.

Saint scholar Bhai Randhir Singh Ji has mentioned a true Sikh does not pick or chose which Hukum he will follow. Instead he respects and follows each Hukum of Guru Sahib.
