Ramayan (the story of Ram) is ever firm (in the mind of people) and whosoever seeks shelter (in it) goes across (the world ocean).

This Daas did some Vichaar on this Pauri. It is not possible to fully understand and comprehend sayings of Brahmgyanis. Here is a meagre attempt at doing some Vichaar on this Pauri:

The subject of this Pauri is not Ramayana or Siri Raam Chand but using their example, Bhai Sahib is proving the Gurmat principle that one gets praised or condemned based on one's Karma. If we do good Karma, we would get praised and if we do bad Karma, we would get condemned and slandered. In Siri Asa kee Vaar there is a Pankiti that goes as follows:

(The kind of deed a person does, so the reputation of such person spreads)

This Pauri gives the example of Ravan and Raam who fought a battle. Ravan committed a bad act and incurred a black stain (ਕਾਲਾ ਟਿਕਾ) by taking away someone else's woman (ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਹਰਣਾ). Till this day people remember his bad deed. On the other hand Rama followed Dharma and till this day his deeds in form of Ramayana are remembered and many people get inspired by his good deeds.

This subject of this Pauri is not Rama or Ravana or Ramayana but Bhai Gurdaas jee is making the point that one's reputation depends on one's deeds.

The above highlighted bracketed meanings seem to be wrong. It is Akal Purakh, whose shelter is being spoken to, not of Ramayana. The story of Ram is OK; but only those (characters of the story or humanity in general) go across; who seek shelter of Akal Purakh.

May be, it is like that.

Well said MB Singh jeeo.

Another thing to ponder upon is that the word ਉਧਰੇ has a very wide range of meanings. If a person is very poor and he is delivered from poverty, he considers it to be his Udhaar from poverty. Salvation from certain sins can be classified as Udhaar. Every type of Udhaar cannot be be classified as Tatt-Gurmat Udhaar.

It is written in one of Bhai Sahib's books that Udhaar has a very wide range of meanings. In the above Pankiti too, if a person after reading Ramayana gets the wisdom that kidnapping someone's wife is a not a good idea and does not commit such a sin, then it is a kind of Udhaar. Of course, it would not be classified as Tatt-Gurmat Udhaar which means becoming one with Vaheguru.

Daas,
