Making Good from Bad

A lot times, we are putting in situations where it really hard to keep your cool. A parent may not let you come into Sikhi, someone may ridicule you for following a certain rehit, parents may not let you go to Sikhi related programs etc. Or even non Sikhi related, being without a job, getting robbed orc heated in anyway. The list is endless, but Guru Sahib has given us a maha bachan on how to deal with such situations...

Fareed, answer evil with goodness; do not fill your mind with anger.

Your body shall not suffer from any disease, and you shall obtain everything. ||78||

Guru Sahib is telling that just by taking the Good from a bad situation, we will not suffer any disease of the body, and receive anything we desire. Thus, just by following this bachan, one will get peace and comfort. By not letting anger enter our minds, we will reap big rewards. This is quite the incentive. Something that we all need to consider the next time we cant control the anger that enters our weak minds. Since everything comes down to Naam and Gurbani, then the best way to control your mind is through the ULTIMATE good deed, of Naam and Gurbani. Engaging in either of these is the best way to cool down the mind, we should have no reason to be angry if we have Akal Purakh's name running on our lips.

Very well said, Gurman Singh jeeo. Anger is a robber that robs us of profits (Laaha) of Naam and Gurbani that we earn by Guru Sahib's Kirpa.

Gursikhs who are always engaged in Naam Abhyaas Kamaaee, always have Gurmat-Shanti residing within them but such Avastha is purely a Daat of Guru Sahib. Majority of us who are still in the battlefield, battling the 5 Bhooths, need to be vigilant against the attacks of these Bhooth, including Krodh (Anger). There is no sanctuary but Naam Abhyaas and Gurbani. Below is an old writeup on Krodh:

Krodh

What is Krodh? Krodh is a force that takes over us when something happens contrary to our opinion. This emotion is very strongly related to the fifth evil Ahankaar or Abhimaan. If something hurts or pierces through to Abhimaam, then one reacts with Krodh to protect one’s Abhimaan. It has been noticed and studied that with increase in Kaam, Krodh too goes upwards. Here I have not been able to deduce a connection between Kaam and Krodh but there is a connection. A Kaami person is also a Krodhi person. Perhaps when one is taken over by Kaam, one uses Krodh to satiate the hunger of Kaam.

Krodh is such a strong feeling that when it overwhelms our mind it takes over Lobh and even Moh. Lobh is the want (Trishna) for worldly substances whereas Moh is the attachment towards worldly substances. When one is in Krodh, one is prepared to sacrifice Kaam, Moh and Lobh to satisfy Krodh but Abhimaan stays intact and actually goes up in this situation. In Krodh, one can hurt one’s loved ones and even kill them. We read stories of brother killing brother and son killing father. Later on, when one’s Krodh subsides, one regrets one’s actions towards loved ones. This proves that Krodh can overtake Moh when it’s in full force. Same way it overtakes Kaam and Lobh also when it is in full force. A person in Krodh forgets about Kaam and even about Lobh. He cares not if he loses all his possessions. This proves that Krodh beats Lobh, when in action.

Krodh does not have a long life and like Kaam stays dominant only for a short period of time but in this short time the consequences of the deeds done under the influence of these two forces can have very long lasting effects. One's whole life can be destroyed because of that one act done under the influence of Kaam or Krodh.

Siri Guru jee have written the following pauri about Krodh in Gurbani:

O Root of all disharmony (fights), O Krodha, you never feel mercy and compassion. You bring Vikaari (evil) persons under your control and then you make them dance like monkey who is danced around by the monkey show-maker. The jeevs under your control become extremely lowly and therefore under the orders of Jammdoots, get punished in different ways. In the end using their Mohar, Siri Guru jee states the truth that only way to get protected from Krodh is to take the refuge of Vaheguru who is the destroyer of sorrows of humble ones.

I can tell you from personal experience that there is definitely a connection. I am unfortunate that I'm still affected by these chor off and on.

Abhimaan (ego) I recently read a shabad where Guru Sahib calls ego 'Paapatama'. The root cause of sin.
