Baani Contributors in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee

Guru Sahibaan whose Baani is in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee are:

1. Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee
2. Siri Guru Angad Dev jee
3. Siri Guru Amardaas jee
4. Siri Guru Raamdaas jee
5. Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee
6. Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur jee

Following are the Bhagats who’s baani is in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee. In reality these bhagats were contemporaries of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and according to our history, Siri Guru jee met them and they became Sikhs of Siri Guru jee.

1. Bhagat Kabir jee
2. Bhagat Naamdev jee
3. Bhagat Ravidas jee
4. Bhagat Ramanand jee
5. Bhagat Parmanand jee
6. Bhagat Sain jee
7. Bhagat Beni jee
8. Bhagat Dhanna jee
9. Bhagat Pipa jee
10. Bhagat Jaidev jee
11. Bhagat Farid jee
12. Bhagat Bhikhan jee
13. Bhagat Trilochan jee
14. Bhagat Surdas jee
15. Bhagat Sadhna jee

Following are the 11 Bhats who’s baani is in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee. These Bhats travelled for one year throughout the Indian subcontinent but could not find anyone who could quench their spiritual thirst and in the end they came to the Darbar of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee. They became Sikhs of Guru and then Guru jee enabled them to pronounce Dhur kee Baani:

Kal Sahaar
Jaalap
Keerat
Bhikha
Sal
Bhal
Nal
Gayand
Mathura
Bal
Harbans

Apart from them Vaar called Ramkali kee Vaar and Tikke kee Vaar, that was read by Hazoori Raagis of Guru Sahib. Their names are:

Rai Balwand
Satta Doom

Finally a baani called Ramkali Sadd was pronounced by Sunder jee, the grandson of Siri Guru Amardas jee.

In total, the contributers of baani of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee are as follows:

6 Guru Sahibaan
15 Bhagats of Guru Nanak Dev jee
11 Bhatts, Sikhs of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee
2 Hazoori Raagis – Sikhs of Guru Arjun Dev jee
1 Grandson and Sikh of of Siri Guru Amardas jee

Total contributers are 6 + 15 + 11 + 2 + 1 = 35

Some Gursikhs believe that there is baani of Bhai Mardana jee too in Gurbani but this is not true. Those saloks with heading Salok Mardana (Mahala) 1 are saloks written by Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee but probably addressed to Bhai Mardana jee.

One thing I would like to add is that in many old saroops there is one salok under the heading Mahalla 10, within Saloks of Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib jee. I personally am sometimes inclined to believe that this indeed is the baani of Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee Maharaaj but present printed Birs of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee don’t contain this heading of Mahalla 10. If we were to assume that this indeed is the baani of Siri Guru Dasmesh jee, then the total contributors of Gurbani would rise to 36.

Hanji I've been wondering about this for some time as well. It makes sense that Mahraj penned this Salok as a response to previous Salok by Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. One thing I don't understand is that if this is indeed the case, why didn't Dasve Paatshah add the rest of their Bani into Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Why only one salok? Is it just Hukam?

One more question on previous Salok:

Is there a Sakhi that this Pangtee is referring to? What elephant?

How the King of Elephants was saved by the Lord


There are several pankitis in Gurbani alluding towards an elephant that was saved from an octopus. Presented below is the brief story of how the elephant was saved by Vaheguru. Hopefully this will enable us to understand many pankitis of Gurbani more clearly.

Gajj means elephant. This Gajj that is referred in Gurbani many times was actually Gajj-Raaj i.e. king of elephants i.e. very strong Elephant who was the king of his herd. In his previous life this Gajj was a very pious king by the name of Inderduman. He was very much inclined towards spirituality and thus gave up his kingdom and went to forests to observe austerities to please the Lord.

He had a bad karma from his previous lives that sprouted while he was in the forest. One day he was sitting in meditation when the famous sage Augustya arrived at his ashram. Since Inderduman was totally engrossed in meditation he did not get up and offer salutations to the arrived Sage Augustya. Augustya had lot of spiritual power that he had gained after observing penances for countless years but without Gurmat Naam, one cannot rid oneself of Kaam, Krodh and other vices. Sage Augustya became very angry and cursed Inderduman of being dumb and not knowing how to serve and respect visitors to his house. He cursed him as being proud and dumb like an elephant. Inderduman accepted the curse and as thus became an elephant in his next life.

After obtaining the body of an elephant, he developed the habits and nature of an elephant. He grew up to be a strong elephant and became the leader of his herd. He resided in the forests around mountain Triputi. There was a very huge and beautiful lake in this forest. One day along with his herd, he went towards the lake destroying vegetation and plants along the way. Seeing this elephants herd coming to the lake, all animals fled in fear. This elephant was very egoistic and thought of himself as being all powerful.

The herd arrived at the lake and continued with it’s unruly behaviour destroying vegetation around the lake. They entered the lake and spoiled the serene atmosphere of the lake. In this lake there lived a huge octopus (some say it was a crocodile) who got upset at the behaviour of the elephants. This octopus was really King Huhu of Gandharv Lok who had been an arch-rival of this elephant in some previous birth. He had received this body of octopus because of some bad karma of his previous life. The Octopus moved forward and grabbed the leg of the king of the herd. The elephant and the octopus were both very strong and proud. They both had a tough fight that continued for a long period of time.

The octopus being the creature of water had an edge over the elephant. At first other elephants tried to help him but they could be of no help as they were scared of getting stuck in a similar situation. They hesitated going in the lake. They stuck around for some time but in the end the elephant was left alone. His pride was shattered. He was losing the battle to this octopus.

Due to some good Karma of previous life, the elephant that by now had lost his pride and come to his senses remembered his previous life. He thought to himself, that everyone had left him and even if they were around, they would not have been able to help him. At this time the only power who can help him is the supreme Lord himself. He remembered the mantras from previous life and called out to the Lord from the bottom of his heart. It’s written in Gurbani that as soon as he called Vaheguru with true heart, Vaheguru immediately released him from his trouble. The elephant had known Vaheguru only as Chatubhuji form. So this is the form Vaheguru took to come and kill the Octopus and release the elephant. The octopus was killed and the elephant was released. The octopus returned back to his world – Gandharva loka and got his position of King Huhu. Due to the sacred touch of the Lord, the elephant was cleared of all his karma and released from the body.

Many pankitis in Gurbani allude to this great incident in the spiritual world and here are some examples:

Jab hee sharan gahee kirpanidh, Gajj Garah tey chhoota||
(As soon as the elephant sought the protection of ocean of Mercy and Grace (Vaheguru), he was released from the clutches of the octopus).

Gajj ko traas mitiyao jih simrat, tum kaahe bisraavo||
(Why do you forget him (Vaheguru), by remembering whom the fear of the elephant was removed).

Gajj kee traas mitee chhinhoo meh, Jab hee Raam bakhaano||
(The fear of the elephant was removed in a second, when he cried out to Raam)

Kar dharey chakkar, Baikunth tey aaye, Gajj Hastee ke praan udhareealay||
(Vaheguru came from his abode with the Sudarshana Chakkar on his hand, and saved the elephant).

Some Gursikhs may have questions as to why Chaturbhuji form came to the Gajj’s aid. The answer to this question is “Jaisi Mansha taisi Dasha”. Vaheguru gives darshan in that form that one is seeking or one believes in. The highest darshan of Vaheguru is his darshan in real form i.e. Nirgun form. What Gajj or many of the older Bhagats envisioned was the Sargun Darshan of the Lord. Gursikhs who japp the Maha-Mantra, the true Mantra given by Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee get the highest darshan of Vaheguru i.e. his original form i.e. the Nirgun form.

Bhai Veer Singh jee says that they were Ragis in the Darbar of Guru Angad Dev ji and not Guru Arjan Dev Dev...found the explanation given by him in Sri Asth Guru Chamatkaar very convincing. As the mention of Guru Sahibaan in Ramkali kee Vaar starts from 2nd Patshahee itself (till 5th Patshahee). Bhai Sahib further says that both father and son, as 2 generations served the Gurus darbar of 4 Guru Sahibaan.

ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਖਿਆਲ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਹੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਉਥਾਨਕਾ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਭਾਈ ਸੱਤਾ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਬਲਵੰਡ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵਾਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਚਰੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੋਲ ਕਬੋਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਾਰੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਵੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਲੇ ਪਦੇ ਤੋ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਕਿ:

ਤਖਤਿ ਬੈਠਾ ਅਰਜਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਖਿਵੈ ਚੰਦੋਆ ||

ਬਾਕੀ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਹਿਲੀਆਂ ਪੰਜੋ ਹੀ (from Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee) ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੈ:

ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਤਿਨੈ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ||…
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤੂ ਲਹਣਾ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਤੂ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ||…


ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੁਸ਼ਟ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕੁਝ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹੀ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਨੇਮ ਵਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ। ਦਾਸ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿੰਘਣੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਤਨੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਨ।
ਬੜੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਵਾਰ ਹੈ। ਖਿਮਾਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਆਪਸ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜਨ ਦਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਕੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਮੈਅਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ। ਆਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਕੁਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਜਲਦ ਹੀ ਇਸਦੀ ਸੰਥਿਆ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਸਤੋਂ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਸੇਧ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿਤਨੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਣ।
