is it shiva or seva

While most people say Shiva I have heard some people say the proper pronunciation is Seva. Personally I think its Shiva and Guru Ji is referring to God. Because I believe Guru Ji is poetically using the popular known characteristics of the Hindu mythological characters. For example, Shiva is known to be merciful and kind. while Rudra the other side of Shiva sees injustice and gets upset/cries out and starts to destroy that which causes injustice. In this shabad Guru Ji mentions he has recited this poetic verse of the stories of Chandi and everything in this poetic hymn contains the rebellious spirit that Rudra possessed.

ਚੰਡਿ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਵਿੱਤਨ ਮੈ ਬਰਨਿਓ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਰਸ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਮਈ ਹੈ ॥

The correct pronunciation is Shiva and Shiva here means Vaheguru and not Shiva or his wife Parvati. Siri Guru jee has made it clear that he never worships Krishna, Vishnu or anyone else. Guru Sahib only worships one Akal Purakh:

May I never be afraid to fight enemies (Ar) and may I attain victory with full confidence.


ਅਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਹੋ ਆਪਨੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਲਾਲਚ ਹਉ ਗੁਨ ਤਉ ਉਚਰੋਂ ॥


May I tame my mind and may I have the desire to utter your (Vaheguru’s) gunn (qualities) ie. May I do kirtan.



ਜਬ ਆਵ ਕੀ ਅੳਧ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਬਨੈ ਅਤ ਹੀ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਤਬ ਜੂਝ ਮਰੋਂ ॥

When the time of my death arrives, may die fighting in the fierce battlefield.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੋ ਵੈਸੇ ਤਾਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਤਿ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬੋਲਣ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ Freedom of Speech ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਥੋਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਪਰ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਜਿਹੀ ਪੜਚੌਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਇਹ ਦੋ ਮਤਲਬ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ:

1. ਸਿਵਾ: Burning Pyre ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਆਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਚਿਤਾ ਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਸਿਵਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਬਲਦੀ ਚਿਤਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਸਿਵਾ ਬਲਣਾ ਆਦਿ।
2. ਸਿਵਾ: Except, besides, without ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਸਵਾਏ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਆਮ ਬੋਲ ਚਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਕਹਿ ਦਈਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਢੁੱਚਰ ਢਾਹੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਵਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਇਤਿ ਆਦਿ।

ਹੁਣ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸੋਚੇ ਕਿ ਆਪਜੀ 'ਸਿਵਾ' ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਕੀ ਚਿਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਵਰ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ? ਜਾਂ ਇਹ ਮੰਗ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਕਰਮਨ ਦੇ ਵਰ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਵਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਵਰ ਮਿਲੇ? ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ! ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਨੇ ਕੇਹੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਬਤੁਕੇ ਅਰਥ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਖਿਮਾਂ ਕਰਨਾਂ ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ Personal Attack ਜਾਂ ਕਟਾਖਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਹਰਗਿਜ਼ ਹੀ ਮੰਤਵ ਨਹੀਂ।

Its funny the way you wrote that you have no shashas. There was a Singh who used to do paath without bindis. When he started taking santhiya, he was taught to pronounce bindis where required. At first he did not feel comfortable but when the reason for pronouncing bindis was explained, he started putting bindis everywhere. When we told him to not place bindis unnecessarily, he one day jokingly said that he is making up for the loss of not pronouncing bindis for so long, while doing paath. Everyone laughed a lot.

i.e sabad insteas of shabad patisahee instead of patishahee
to me as long as the meanings are in my head and i know what im saying its alrite
